On November 14th 2019 the ECHS JROTC took 24 cadets on a trip to the Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC) in Ashland, KY to assist with the 20th annual Envisioning the Future Days. Envisioning the Future Days is an event held at KEDC with activities focused on students that have visual impairments. This year’s theme was “Physical Activity”. Students and cadets were encouraged to be more physically active. While at this event everyone completed an obstacle course, game station (consisting of games adapted for the visually impaired), and a dance class with a variety for dances.
This event was the culmination of a lot of planning and training for our Service Learning Project. What is Service Learning? Service learning is an active and experiential learning strategy where students have a direct impact on an identified need that interests and motivates them. It requires sequential lessons that are organized so orientation and training come before the meaningful service activity and structured reflection follows the activity. Service learning requires active participation in structured teamwork.
Our cadets were very professional and most importantly compassionate, as a number were assigned to assist students with visual impairments. The experience we shared with those kids will make life long memories and was a blessing to all.
