Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members;
This letter is to address the safety of our students and staff at Elliott County Schools. Providing a safe learning environment for all students is our number one priority. Recent unfortunate events throughout our state and country have heightened worries for parents and students.
Please talk with your child to express the urgency to share information regarding school safety or threats with adults as soon as they are made aware of those potential risks. Sharing with peers or on social media could spread misinformation impeding investigations of factual events or details.
Parents and guardians, we NEED you to monitor student interactions with peers and online activity. Social media can be useful as well as detrimental to students’ wellbeing. Elliott County Schools will investigate potential threats in collaboration with local law enforcement as well as the Kentucky State Police.
It is of the utmost importance that you explain to your child/young adult the consequences of terroristic threatening. Terrorists threatening can be defined as making false statements by any means, including by electronic communication, for the purpose of: 1) causing evacuation of a school building, school property, or school sanctioned activity; 2) causing cancellation of school classes or school sanctioned activity; or 3) creating fear of serious bodily harm among students, parents, or school personnel. Individuals will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for participating or promoting such terrorist acts. We urge you to communicate these serious actions with your students.
Please support our efforts to safeguard ALL students in Elliott County Schools. The following safety measures are in place:
· Exterior doors are locked
· Classroom doors are locked during instructional time
· All visitors are electronically admitted into school after verification
· Trained threat assessment teams
· All staff is trained in active shooter protocols
· Staff and students practice safety drills on regular basis
Elliott County is partnering with the sheriff’s department and the Kentucky State Police at Post 8 to increase security measures in these uneasy times. We appreciate your understanding as we navigate these challenges.
Sincerely,
Dolly Fannin
Elliott County Superintendent
